The honest summary
SportsEngine is a multi-sport, multi-tier platform owned by NBC Sports. It powers registration, governing-body member management, websites, schedules, payments, and broad team communication across dozens of sports. Many USA Water Polo zone and governing-body infrastructure runs on SportsEngine. Breadth, scale, and registration depth are the value prop.
Eggbeater is built specifically for water polo. Live in-game scoring with full play-by-play, tournament hosting with branded public pages, per-player box scores updated in real time, the FINA 3-kickout rule enforced automatically, season-long League Builder, and printable trilingual game-desk volunteer guides. Depth in one sport on game day is the value prop.
For most water polo programs the right answer isn't either/or. SportsEngine handles registration, member records, and large-program infrastructure. Eggbeater handles game day.

Pick by use case
If you're a tournament host Pick Eggbeater
Live scoring, branded public pages in your colors, per-player box scores, 3-kickout enforcement, trilingual game-desk guides, and a tournament-wide host dashboard — none of which SportsEngine does at the water-polo level. $199 flat per event, no per-team fees.
If you're a club running games Pick Eggbeater
You want the live scorer in your volunteers' hands during games. The depth of water polo specific stats — FBU, Inside-2m saves, earned exclusions, 6-on-5 power play splits, kickout vs common penalty — exists nowhere else.
If you need registration + member mgmt SportsEngine
USA Water Polo membership tracking, large-club enrollment, governing-body workflows, payments at scale, multi-sport family households. SportsEngine is the industry standard for this, and Eggbeater doesn't compete on it.
For most water polo programs Use both
SportsEngine for registration, member records, and program-wide infrastructure. Eggbeater for game day — live scoring, branded tournament pages, water-polo-specific stats, the League Builder for in-season play. They don't overlap much; they complement.
The water-polo-specific edge
The reason Eggbeater exists is that no general-purpose multi-sport platform understands water polo at the level the sport actually plays at. A few examples that matter game-to-game:
- Earned exclusions vs personal exclusions are different stats — one credits the attacker who drew the foul, one tracks the defender who was kicked out. Generic platforms collapse them or miss earned excls entirely.
- Kickout vs common penalty matters because only kickouts count toward the 3-strike rule. A player can rack up 3 common penalties and stay in the game; 3 kickouts and they're out for the day.
- 6-on-5 power play splits on goals tell you how a team scored — power-play conversion rate is one of the most predictive team stats in water polo. Generic apps don't track it.
- Forced Ball Under (FBU) steals are a different aggressive defensive stat than a regular interception. College coaches recruit on FBU rate.
- Inside-2m saves are the highlight saves — point-blank stops where the goalie is in maximum danger. Generic save counts collapse them.

What SportsEngine genuinely does better
Honesty pass — these are real:
- Registration & payments at scale. SportsEngine HQ is the dominant registration platform in youth and amateur sports for a reason — it handles thousands of registrants, payment plans, custom waivers, household billing, refund workflows. Eggbeater doesn't (yet — it's on the roadmap).
- Governing-body infrastructure. National and zone governing bodies often standardize on SportsEngine for membership tracking, sanctioning, and cross-club operations. If you're plugging into that ecosystem, you're already there.
- Cross-sport household households. Families running soccer + hockey + water polo through one app with one login have real ergonomic value, even if per-sport depth is shallower.
- Maturity & support. SportsEngine has been around for over a decade and has enterprise-grade customer support, SLA agreements, dedicated account managers, and a long edge-case track record. Eggbeater is newer.
- Website builder. If you need a full public club website with news, photo galleries, sponsor logos, and rich content management, SportsEngine's site builder is the more capable tool.
Compare with other tools
SportsEngine is the platform-suite category. If you're comparing against a different category — pure team management, pure league management, or bracket-only — these are a more honest read:
Eggbeater vs TeamSnap →
If your decision is really "what's the right team-management app?", this is the comparison you want. TeamSnap is lighter-weight than SportsEngine, focused on per-team scheduling and communication rather than enterprise registration.
Eggbeater vs LeagueApps →
If your decision is really "how do I run an entire season?", LeagueApps is the more focused league-management comparison. Water-polo-aware League Builder vs generic league infrastructure.
Eggbeater vs Challonge →
If you only need a bracket sheet for a single tournament weekend and don't care about live scoring, this comparison shows where the cheap-and-fast tools end and where a hosted platform starts to pull ahead.
